Martial Arts Will Help Your Child’s Development

Enrolling your child in a good martial arts program will benefit your child in many more ways than just self-defense.  Martial arts will help in nearly every aspect of your child’s life!  It will improve your child’s fitness, health, balance, coordination, body awareness, behavior, attitude, work ethic, focus, patience and many other aspects of their life.  Martial arts can also provide a very strong positive role model for our children.  Does all this sound too good to be true?  Well, it’s not!  Many experts, teachers and parents agree that martial arts improves all these areas in our youth.  For this blog I am going to focus on 2 important aspects, Positive Role models and Health and Fitness.

A Positive Role Model

This is such an important idea to me.  Think for a second and ask yourself, Who are my child’s role models or idols?  There is a good chance, depending on the age of your child, that your child’s role models are either celebrities, rock stars, athletes or an actor/character on TV.  Now ask yourself what kinds of messages are these role models sending to your children? There is a good chance these role models aren’t the best role models for our youth.  A martial arts instructor can and should be a positive role model for your child.  They are re-enforcing the same values that you teach your children at home and the best part is they not only teach, but they live these values showing your child that it can be done!  When I was growing up, one of my martial arts instructors was my role model and I pushed myself hard to be the student he knew I could be!  As I grew older and moved to Sacramento, I found a new instructor named Mr. Dave Kovar.  He again challenged and inspired me to be a better man, martial artist and teacher.  His lessons were valuable, but what really hit home to me was he was living this lifestyle day in and day out.

Fitness and Health

A good martial arts school will not only just get your child moving around, but it will also teach the importance of a well-balanced life with fitness, a proper diet, healthy habits, learning and getting lots of rest.  These are all important ingredients to living a healthy life.  How valuable is it to you to have your child learn these tips at an early age?  And have a role model who they look up to re-enforce these habits daily when they come to class?  So many issues found in our children today stem from bad health and fitness habits.    According to http://kidshealth.org/parent/nutrition_center/staying_fit/exercise.html

The Many Benefits of Exercise

  1. Everyone can benefit from regular exercise. Kids who are active will:

  2. have stronger muscles and bones.

  3. Have a leaner body because exercise helps control body fat be less likely to become overweight.

  4. Decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes possibly lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels have a better outlook on life.

  5. Besides enjoying the health benefits of regular exercise, kids who are physically fit sleep better and are better able to handle physical and emotional challenges — from running to catch a bus to studying for a test.

And these are just a few, there are more benefits to daily exercise!

In conclusion, get your children involved in martial arts.  I may be a bit biased, but besides my parents, I feel martial arts was the second biggest influence in my life.  I am so lucky because it taught me so many great lessons, gave me positive role models and kept me healthy.  For the month of December, Innovative Martial Arts is running a special program called the “White Belt in a Bag.”  For only $25, you can buy a White belt in a bag for a friend for the Holidays and give the gift that keeps on kicking.  This package will include a FREE uniform and a month of classes.  This is normally a $50 program at Innovative Martial Arts and has an actual value of $149.  Find more about it HERE
